Reason for Priority

While technical innovation is making life convenient and comfortable, social issues have become more complex and profound. In this environment, companies are expected to innovate in order to creative innovative products and services that lead to solutions for social issues. Also integrating diverse technologies and ideas to crease new products and services is essential for companies to survive and develop amid accelerating development of technology.


Under our corporate philosophy of Trustworthiness and Creativity, the Nikon Group will address a variety of social issues and needs, leveraging opto-electronics technology and precision technology, our core technologies.
Under our Medium-Term Management Plan announced in May 2019, we set out "digital manufacturing," "vision systems/robotics," and "healthcare" as the areas of long-term growth for the Nikon Group, and we identified the material processing business within the digital manufacturing area as a central theme during the period of the Medium-Term Management Plan. In recent years, the environment surrounding the manufacturing industry has changed significantly, including the transformation of manufacturing due to AI and IoT and labor shortages and the accompanying increasing need for automation due to the return of production to developed countries. In this environment, the Nikon Group will further enhance the value of the technology that we have cultivated in the past through research and development. We will also actively embrace technologies and ideas from inside and outside the company through such means as open innovation to bring about innovation that creates new value.

Main initiatives and results in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019

Received an award for research on cutting-edge technology and presented this research at an academic event


In research and development, Nikon has been focusing on data processing technology—which has been developing rapidly in recent years—and seeking the application of artificial intelligence (AI) not only to products but also to production processes. We have also been engaging in the research and development of other leading-edge technology.
In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019, a Nikon research paper that reported the achievement of outstanding resolution in super-resolution microscopes—a field attracting a great deal of interest in the life sciences—received an award from the Japan Society of Applied Physics (JSAP), and we delivered a lecture at the JSAP Autumn Meeting 2018.

Collaboration with venture companies


Nikon is promoting open innovation with the aim of achieving continued innovation while addressing social issues. We are examining the potential for developing new business areas by identifying venture companies that can create synergy with Nikon, and through investment by venture capital funds. In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019, we collaborated with a venture company on the development of a high-energy X-ray source* for non-destructive testing; this new technology was showcased at the 9th International Conference on Industrial Computed Tomography (iCT 2019) in Padova, Italy. In addition, we made strategic investments in three new venture companies.

  • *This X-ray source has been successfully miniaturized, to facilitate high-resolution imaging of jet engine turbines, etc.
